Outside forces in the form of terrorism are now threatening human lives and their lifestyles. The government is forced to act, and people find these ways and means not very appropriate. Take the “war on terrorism” taken on by the Bush Administration. It gives unrestricted power to arrest citizens without any charges. To make things more frightening, it can hide such operations legally from the public eye.
One of the amendments is the rights to be free of irrational search and capture. Thanks to terrorism, people who ought to be protected have become defenseless.
Is the freedom of democracy being slowly but surely taken away? The idea is to find the balance between reasonable and irrational. One good way of doing that is to go back to the beginning and look through the eyes of the Founding Fathers of Democracy.
Let us take a milder example -- the freedom of speech -- which will explain the idea behind freedom and democracy. You can talk about politics, racial discrimination and faith as long as you do not offend the other person. This does not impede your liberty; it merely protects the others’ freedom.
It might take a lifetime to learn the nuances of rights in a world bombarded with wars, issues and emerging schools of thought. Still, it is worth every citizen's while and, indeed, our duty to see how best the Bill of Rights should serve us.
