Pros and Cons on Immigrants
| Immigration can be defined as movement of people from one country to the other. Migration of humans has been in existence since ages. The prime motive behind migration is to escape from poverty and earn a higher standard of living in developed countries. Apart from this, other factors that influence human immigration include natural disasters, unemployment, education, medical reasons and overpopulation. |
However, there are certain non-economic factors that influence immigration including persecution, racial discrimination, civil war, oppression, ethnic cleansing and genocide. Immigration is typically of two types. Some people enter the country legally and reside there abiding by the rules of immigration law. Others tend to enter the country illegally thereby violating the immigration laws. Even foreigners who had entered the country legally and are overstaying their visa are termed as illegal immigrants.
Immigration is a much debated issue that has both positive and negative impacts.
Pros of immigration:
Immigrants are preferred over natives because they provide low-cost labor to business people and farmers. Immigrants are more sought after for doing work that are hazardous and require intense labor. Immigration creates a pool of consumers for a variety of goods and consumers. Apart from these aspects, immigrants also contribute to national economy by paying sales taxes, real estate taxes, auto insurance, home insurance and other contributions. Due to immigration, industries including real estate, banking, automobile and medical health is kept busy.
Cons of Immigration:
The most fundamental problem of immigration is increase in the rate of unemployment. Immigrants compete with locals for obtaining jobs. Another problem of immigration is increase in population. Increased population leads to various ramifications including shortage of land, water and other valuable resources. Apart from that, more the population more is the damage caused to the environment. States need to provide funding for the purpose of organizing rehabilitation programs to those who had migrated into the country illegally. Other problems include communication gap, terrorism, increased crime rate, racial discrimination and loss of cultural identity.
