How To Protest Property Taxes ?
Property taxes are local dues. Your local official assesses your property, sets your tax rates and collects your taxes. Your most important right as a taxpayer is your right to protest to the Appraisal Review Board (ARB) if you disagree with any of the appraisal district’s actions as regards your property. |

For instance, if over last year the values of most real estates have decreased and not increased, and your tax liability has increased not decreased, you might want to protest your real estate taxes. So, how do you go about protesting your property tax?
There will most certainly be information on the tax notice, or attached to it, that gives information on protesting the tax, and possibly even a form to work with. The next step for you to take is to fill in this form, and send it to your tax appraisal district and get a scheduled meeting with the property appraiser, who explains why your value has increased, or whether it would be reduced.
If you are not satisfied with the outcome, file an appeal to the Appeal Board, but make sure you have the accepted reasons for appeal -- normally appreciation and depreciation rate. You will subsequently be notified of the hearing date. Make sure you carry out a thorough research on the reasons for your protest. This will be used during your presentation with the Appeal Board.
Be prepared for your presentation by making notes. Have copies of the reasons for your protest in hand. Start the presentation by giving information about your house. Provide the percentage of increase of taxes over last year, over the last five years, and over the last ten years. Then contrast and compare your property with other similar properties in the neighborhood that you have researched.
